Hidden Joys of EV Ownership

Updated: 5 days ago

Sept. 27, 2024

I was telling a long-time buddy about the new 2024 Dodge Daytona Charger EV I drove in and was so impressed with recently. He and his wife have a few high performance cars, each also has a daily driver, and they've been raving about the BEV (battery electric vehicle) they bought to replace his wife's daily driver. They've discovered things they weren't expecting and think it's just the best thing ever! While it won't replace their high performance cars, they find the EV is the one they always want to drive, and have to make a conscious effort to exercise the others occasionally!

I asked why they chose to buy an EV, and what it was about it that they like so much.

Why? They liked the idea of owning a truly modern type of vehicle, not for fuel savings or to make any kind of statement.

What she likes:

  • it instantly heats up the interior, no need to wait for a gas engine to warm up.

  • she dislikes going to gas stations and now she doesn't have to, charges at home.

  • driving confidence in the EV due to its mechanical simplicity without an engine.

  • less need and fear of being taken advantage of when taking a vehicle in for service.

What he likes:

  • it's fun factor with instant powerful acceleration, way more fun to drive.

  • appreciates it being dead quiet, lots of glorious exhaust noise in his others.

  • instant, no downshift, full torque acceleration without noise to draw attention

  • never having to go to a gas station, he installed a ChargePoint home charger.

  • no range anxiety, don't drive it far enough to ever need to stop at a charge station.

  • feels great to not be burning fossil fuel.

  • 10,000 kms (6,200 mi) has cost only $192 in hydro usage, tiny fraction of cost of gas.

  • feels like they're driving for free because it cost so little to use.

  • guilt-free to use when and as often as they like, no need to plan efficient use, just go.

  • ChargePoint charger automatically charges at night when hydro rates are the lowest.

  • no maintenance, scheduled maintenance is just to change the cabin filter basically.

  • no engine oil, coolant, transmission or differential fluids or fluid changes, ever.

  • EV has no fluids to leak on driveway or garage floor, ever.

  • no spark plugs, belts or engine air filter to replace, ever.

  • no catalytic converters, mufflers or exhaust pipes to replace, ever.

  • regenerative braking charges the battery as you drive.

  • huge time and hassle savings, no scheduling and leaving for a day for an oil change

  • higher intitial EV purchase price far outweighed by fuel and maintenace savings.

  • no battery replacement concern with 80% min. capacity warranted for 8-10 years.

  • EV depreciation no worse over several years, and could be less with less to wear out.

  • less guilt when driving his sports cars due to using no fuel for most of their driving.

  • and feels good knowing Ontario's energy mostly comes from nuclear, water and renewable power generation.

That's a lot of likes, and they have absolutely no EV dislikes. The EV vehicle they carefully chose also offers them great comfort and convenience, so they're very happy with their purchase. Since they own other vehicles to use for occasional longer trips, having an EV for their daily use makes perfect sense for them...and they love it!

I wasn't even aware of most of these hidden joys of EV ownership, but glad to now know, and I hope you found them enlightening as well. I won't be replacing my V-10 Viper with an EV anytime soon, but I sure could see parking a modern new Dodge Charger Daytona next to it soon, with the choice of very powerful EV or 6 cylinder twin turbo coming!

And coincidentally, it was announced yesterday that the Green Car Journal's 2025 Performance Green Car of the Year Award goes to the Dodge Daytona Charger EV! https://greencarjournal.com/hero-feature/2025-green-car-awards-winners/
